Leave a hinge behind the mouth

Each apple quarter needs enough fruit behind its shallow V-shaped cut to hold together. Place the quarter securely on the board and cut from the skin side without cutting through the back. A small, shallow opening is easier to fill than a deep cavity. If a quarter splits, serve it as slices with a little spread instead of trying to join it with a hidden toothpick.

Slice each large strawberry lengthwise into four tongues. Blot wet fruit before assembly so the peanut butter has a dry surface to cling to. Reserve the small dab for the eyes first, then divide the rest among the eight mouths. This keeps the measured spread sufficient for both jobs.

Arrange the details before you start

Set the sunflower kernels and edible eyes in separate small dishes. Each monster uses six kernels and two eyes, so count a set beside each apple quarter. Press the kernels into the upper edge of the mouth and tuck the strawberry tongue into the spread. Attach the eyes last so they are less likely to be knocked off during assembly.

This is an activity for people who can safely eat firm raw apple and the small decorations. For young children, prepare a separate portion with a suitable texture and omit decorations they cannot manage. A smaller raw apple piece is not automatically suitable.

Handle swaps and waiting time deliberately

The sunflower seed butter option changes the spread, not the need to check every label. Candy eyes and seed products may have their own allergen information or cross-contact statements. Keep packages available, use clean utensils for each spread and avoid describing a tray as allergy-free.

Assemble close to serving for the freshest apple surface. If there is a wait, cover and refrigerate the pieces. For a smaller tray, use one apple and half the remaining ingredients to make four monsters. Leave the second apple whole until another round is wanted.
