12 toasts • est. 25 min • 4 shown
Ingredients

- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 60 g cream cheese
- 1/4 tsp each garlic powder & salt
- 6 rectangular crackers
- 1 tbsp chopped parsley
Method
Toast bread at 375°F / 190°C for 8–10 min; cool. Sauté mushrooms in oil with garlic and salt 8–10 min until tender and dry. Cool slightly. Spread cheese on toasts; add mushrooms. Halve crackers; stand 1 half in each. Add parsley.
Choose small toasts and prepare the faces
Cut baguette slices about 1/2 inch thick and roughly 2 inches across. A large baguette makes larger toasts and needs more topping per piece; the stated batch is twelve small pieces, not a promise that one baguette always supplies every tray. For all three recipes you need thirty-six slices in total. Toast in a single layer, checking the edges as bread thickness varies. Let cool before adding the dairy-based toppings.
Drain the thawed peas well. Use ready-to-eat frozen peas only when their package permits that use; otherwise cook according to the packet and chill before blending. For the pepper spread, use roasted peppers rather than raw peppers, pat them dry and then weigh out the 150 g. Excess packing liquid can make the topping runny. The mozzarella needs to be sliceable so its small triangles keep their shape.
The pea monsters need twenty-four olive rings. Choose olives large enough to cut four usable rings each; have an extra olive available if a ring breaks. For the vampires, halve twelve olives lengthwise for twenty-four eyes and cut the measured mozzarella into twenty-four small triangles. Each toast gets two eyes and two fangs.
For each graveyard, gently press one cracker half into the mushroom topping just before serving. It is a small decorative headstone, not a handle. Choose crackers that break into suitable rectangular halves and save broken crumbs for another use. Let the cooked mushrooms cool slightly before assembly so they do not immediately soften the bread.
Make the collection without crowding the kitchen
Toast all the bread first at 375°F / 190°C. While it cools, cook the mushrooms in a wide pan; stir and allow their released moisture to evaporate. Work in batches if your pan is crowded. The suggested 8–10 minutes is a guide: the mushrooms should be tender and the pan should no longer contain a puddle.
Blend the green mixture before the red one, washing the equipment between recipes. Switch off before scraping the bowl or touching a blade. These small batches may not reach the blades in a large blender jug; use suitable equipment rather than adding unmeasured liquid to compensate.
Spread the toppings across the twelve pieces before decorating. That makes it easier to share the mixture evenly. Finish a small platter at a time, adding the cracker headstones last. All three batches together make approximately thirty-six snack pieces; how many guests they serve depends on the rest of your menu.
Keep the toppings chilled and serve promptly
You can prepare the pea and pepper spreads earlier on the serving day, cover and refrigerate them, and keep the cooled toast separately. Refrigerate cooked mushroom topping promptly in a shallow covered container. Decorate shortly before serving to preserve the clearest faces and crispest bread.
Keep the refrigerator at 40°F / 4°C or below. Refrigerate perishable food within two hours, or within one hour if the surrounding temperature exceeds 90°F / 32°C. Do not mix a fresh cold batch into a platter that has been left out for a long time.
FDA storage guidance explains refrigerator temperatures and serving limits.
Bread and crackers usually contain wheat, and all three toppings use milk ingredients. Check the actual packaging for other allergens and use separate utensils when needed. These recipes do not establish an allergy-free claim or a tested storage life.
