Three savory Halloween party recipes with golden sausage mummies, cheesy jalapeño poppers and a sour-cream spiderweb buffalo chicken dip. Choose one recipe or make the collection. Full quantities and methods come first, with the preparation order below. All times are estimates.
1. Mini Mummy Sausage Bites
24 bites · estimated 35 minutes
Ingredients
- 250 g ready-rolled puff pastry, thawed if frozen
- 24 fully cooked cocktail sausages
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard, for decorating
Method
- Heat the oven to 200°C / 400°F. Line a baking tray with parchment. Pat the fully cooked sausages dry.
- Cut the pastry into thin strips about 5 mm wide. Wrap a few strips around each sausage, leaving a small gap near one end for the face. Place on the tray with space between them.
- Brush the pastry lightly with beaten egg. Bake for 15–20 minutes, until the pastry is puffed and golden and the sausages are hot through.
- Cool for 5 minutes. Use tiny dots of mustard for eyes in the gaps; you may not need all the mustard. Serve warm.
Assembly notes
Start with fully cooked cocktail sausages, as specified in the recipe. Pat them dry before wrapping so the pastry strips stay where you put them. Leave the small face gap as you wrap; it is easier than trying to expose the sausage after baking. Brush the pastry lightly with beaten egg, leaving the gap clear.
The eyes are mustard dots, added after the five-minute cooling step. They are not candy eyes or cheese circles. A small amount makes two clear dots, so the tablespoon is a decorating allowance rather than a requirement to use it all. The pin shows six of the twenty-four bites.
2. Mummy Jalapeño Poppers
16 poppers · estimated 40 minutes
Ingredients
- 8 large jalapeño peppers
- 115 g cream cheese, softened
- 50 g finely shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
- 250 g ready-rolled puff pastry, thawed if frozen
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 2 tbsp finely chopped black olives, for decorating
Method
- Heat the oven to 200°C / 400°F. Line a tray with parchment. Halve the jalapeños lengthwise and remove the seeds and white membranes. Wash hands well after handling the peppers and avoid touching your eyes.
- Mix cream cheese, cheddar and paprika. Divide the filling between the 16 pepper halves.
- Cut the pastry into thin strips and wrap them loosely around each filled pepper, leaving a gap for the eyes. Place filling-side up on the tray and brush the pastry lightly with beaten egg.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes, until the pastry is golden and cooked through. Cool for 5 minutes, then add tiny olive pieces as eyes; you may not need all the olives. Serve warm.
Assembly notes
Each of the eight peppers becomes two filled halves. Remove the seeds and white membranes before filling and wash your hands well afterward; keep your hands away from your eyes while handling the peppers. Divide the cheese filling between all sixteen halves before you start wrapping.
Use loose pastry strips so there is room for them to puff. Keep the filled side facing up on the lined tray and leave the eye gap open. The black eyes are small olive pieces attached after baking and cooling. The pin shows four of the sixteen poppers.
3. Spiderweb Buffalo Chicken Dip
6 servings · estimated 35 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 cups shredded cooked chicken
- 225 g cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream, divided
- 1/3 cup (80 ml) buffalo hot sauce
- 1 cup (100 g) shredded cheddar cheese
- 150 g tortilla chips, to serve
Method
- Heat the oven to 180°C / 350°F. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the sour cream for the web.
- Mix the cooked chicken, cream cheese, remaining sour cream, buffalo hot sauce and cheddar until evenly combined. Spread in a shallow ovenproof dish about 20 cm wide.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, until bubbling and hot through the center. Let stand for 5 minutes.
- Spoon the reserved sour cream into a small piping bag. Pipe concentric circles over the dip, then drag a skewer outward from the center at intervals to make a web. Serve warm with tortilla chips.
Assembly notes
Measure the half cup of sour cream first, then take two tablespoons from it for the web. The remainder goes into the dip. This keeps the written quantity intact: the decoration is reserved from the recipe, not an additional amount of cream. Use shredded cooked chicken.
The shallow dish is about twenty centimetres across. After baking, give the dip its five-minute rest before decorating. Pipe circles onto the surface and pull a skewer outward from the centre at intervals. The image shows one full six-serving dish, with tortilla chips for serving.
A practical preparation order
Both mummy recipes use the same oven setting, 200°C / 400°F, while the dip uses 180°C / 350°F. Plan separate oven rounds rather than changing any of the stated temperatures. Prepare the pastry trays first, keeping the sausage and pepper batches identifiable, and reserve the dip’s sour cream before mixing.
Leave the mustard and olive eyes until after the mummy trays have cooled for five minutes. Bake the dip at its own setting, rest it for five minutes, then pipe the web. Serve each recipe warm as its method directs. The three recipes are different-sized batches: twenty-four sausage bites, sixteen poppers and one six-serving dip. Those figures are not a guaranteed guest count.
